Jul 27, 2023

To earn good money as a vet nurse (its possible!) and I have some advice for you to take into consideration and how to make your dream career work for you!

1. Gain experience and specialize: Continuously build on your skills and knowledge by gaining experience in various areas of veterinary nursing. Specializing in a specific area, such as emergency medicine, anesthesia, or surgery, can make you more valuable and increase your earning potential.

2. Further education and certifications: Pursue additional education or certifications to enhance your qualifications. This can include advanced veterinary nursing courses, specialized certifications, or even a bachelor's degree in veterinary nursing. Having higher qualifications can make you eligible for higher-paying positions.

3. Work in high-demand areas: Consider working in areas where there is a high demand for vet nurses. This can include locations with a shortage of veterinary professionals or areas with a higher cost of living that typically offer higher salaries. Rural or remote areas might also offer higher salaries to attract vet nurses.

4. Seek employment in specialty practices: Specialty veterinary practices, such as referral hospitals or specialized clinics, often offer higher salaries compared to general practices. These facilities often require specialized skills and experience, but the compensation can be rewarding.

5. Negotiate your salary: When applying for a job or negotiating a salary increase, be prepared to discuss your qualifications, experience, and the value you bring to the practice. Research the average salary range for vet nurses in your area and use this information to negotiate a fair compensation package.

6. Consider additional sources of income: In addition to your regular job, explore opportunities for additional income. This can include taking on locum positions (temporary or substitute roles), providing freelance services, or offering pet-related services such as pet sitting or dog walking. These additional sources of income can supplement your earnings as a vet nurse.

7. Stay up-to-date with industry trends, start a blog or something social media savvy on the side!

8. Work for a privately owned practice over a chain store. You will find that chain and corporate clinics will often be less flexible on pay rises and negotiating.... why is that you may ask? Because a corporate company is set up to MAKE MONEY, it's a business seen from all aspects. However small independently owned clinic are generally a more wholesome and accomodating workplace.
